AHMEDABAD:
If you are feeling guilty about leaving your old parents in a
dilapidated old-age home, help is coming your way to help lighten the
burden on your conscience. A swanky old-age home, being constructed on
the outskirts of the city, will be ready in about a year and will boast
of facilities which even some five-star hotels would envy.
Being constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 10 crore, an amount almost entirely donated by super-rich businessmen from the city and abroad, the 'Shravan Ashram' will house nearly 300 inmates in some 30,000 square yards of facility. The land for this purpose, costing nearly Rs 1.25 crore and located near Adalaj off the Sarkhej-Gandhinagar highway, has been donated by Gautam Adani of the Adani Group.

Many other businessmen of the city and those settled abroad have
already pledged huge sums of money for the project, prominent among them
being Pankaj Patel of Zydus Cadila who has promised an amount of Rs 1
crore. A member of the Tulsi Seva Charitable Trust headed by Shri Kirit
Bhaiji, a chartered account from London turned religious preacher, said,
"This is going to be by far the best old-age home in the country as it
will have facilities which the best clubs and hotels of Ahmedabad will
be proud of. "
Pankaj Patel said that there is an acute need for old-age homes providing the right kind of ambience and facilities to the aged. "If you visit some of the existing old-age homes you realise the need for good homes where the old can live a dignified life", he said Gautam Adani, who donated 15 'bighas' of land for the purpose said, "Its for a good cause and I decided to do my bit for the project."
The trust, which has set up a special fund for the purpose headed by local businessman Girish Dani, informs that the air-conditioned old-age home will have about 50 rooms, 10 luxury apartments and 4 dormitories to house the elderly and destitute. Accommodation in a dormitory will cost around Rs 600 and the rest of the expenses will be borne by the trust from the corpus which is to be created.
"So far we have raised Rs 3 crores and funds are not a problem at all because many large corporate houses are interested in the project. Our aim is not just 5-Star facilities but 7-Star facilities," said Dani. Food at the home will be of the highest quality. Apart from this, there will be meditation halls, a nursing home, workshop, library, computer room, health club and gymnasium.
The trustees say the idea had also appealed to a lot of prominent people who would not like to become a burden on their children during their old-age and had expressed the desire to stay in the home once it is ready. The 10 luxury apartments are being specifically created for this category of people and each apartment would cost around Rs 10 lakh, fully funded by those who want to occupy it at a later date.
Besides, several NRIs whose parents don't want to join them abroad, had evinced keen interest in the project as they feel the elders would be better cared for in the old-age home. A large guest-house, where children or relatives of the inmates can come and stay for upto a week, is also being constructed in the campus. "We are sure this will be one place where elderly people would like to come and stay and not be resentful about the attitude of their children," added Dani, who is turning his trip to South Africa, to watch the World Cup, into a fund-raising trip.
