Wedding to light up old-age home | Ahmedabad | Gujarat

AHMEDABAD: When Palak Dak, 24, a resident of CG Road, is married on November 29, it will be unlike any other wedding this season. It will not only make her family happy, but also bring a smile to more than 200 senior citizens in the city, who will participate in the wedding ceremony.

Palak and her family decided to donate all monetary wedding gifts to Jeevan Sandhya, a Naranpura-based old-age home. The family believes this initiative will inspire many others to help society in similar ways, making special occasions more memorable.

Palak's father and uncle have been active volunteers at the old age home in Vadaj. "I used to tag along and listen to their tales. As I grew older, I started to understand their plight. I was proud of them for braving all obstacles and leading a life of dignity. Thus, when we started to plan my wedding, I proposed to do something for this old age home and got an overwhelming response from both families," she says.

Her uncle, Sheshmal Dak, says that a traditional Indian wedding costs more than Rs 2 to 3 lakh for a middle-class family. "If even one per cent of these expenses go to the needy, half of our society's problems can be solved. We see tons of food thrown away at wedding venues every season. So we decided to abandon that. Our ceremony will be a simple one with even artificial flowers, so as not to harm nature," he said. Even the counter for 'chandlo' (money gifts) will have a banner reading - 'Jemne aapan ne nanpan ma aangli aapi emne chalo aaje haath aapiye, saath aapiye.' (Let us give a hand to those whose fingers we held in our childhood)

Farsubhai Kakkad of Jeevan Sandhya told TOI that the event will be a grand one for these seniors. "Today, when children are pushing parents out of homes, such an incident shows that there are always two sides to a coin. We are elated at the gesture and hope it will set an example for society," he says.

Shanti Niketan Senior Living | Old Age Home | Ahmedabad | Gujarat

AHMEDABAD: It is not surprising that in Gujarat the elderly who choose to live in a retirement home can find an abode that is akin to a retreat. For instance, a new project called Shantiniketan Senior Living aspires to offer care and comfort that fulfill emotional, social, and spiritual needs of the elderly. The project - conceived by Akhil Gujarat Charitable Trust with the support of Sarapur Seva Trust - is situated near Adalaj. The campus can accommodate about 200 senior citizens. Each of the 100 double-bedrooms is equipped with an air conditioner and a LCD TV. There will also be a doctor-on-call facility, a physiotherapy room, and a large dining room with a modern kitchen serving vegetarian meals.

Shantiniketan also provides day-boarding facility for senior citizens who are left alone throughout the day as their children go to work. A pick-up and drop service is available.
The organization also plans to invite schoolchildren to the campus on holidays and vacations, so that they can learn something from the experience of the seniors, who in turn can revel in the liveliness of children of the age of their grandchildren.

"I strongly believe that the blessings of the omnipresent God are realized through the blessings of the elders." says Utkarsh Shah, the managing trustee of Shantiniketan. "We are also trying to work out something to utilize the experience of these senior citizens in various NGOs around the city."

Sharvan Ashram | Gujarat | Five Star Old Age Home

AHMEDABAD: If you are feeling guilty about leaving your old parents in a dilapidated old-age home, help is coming your way to help lighten the burden on your conscience. A swanky old-age home, being constructed on the outskirts of the city, will be ready in about a year and will boast of facilities which even some five-star hotels would envy.

Being constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 10 crore, an amount almost entirely donated by super-rich businessmen from the city and abroad, the 'Shravan Ashram' will house nearly 300 inmates in some 30,000 square yards of facility. The land for this purpose, costing nearly Rs 1.25 crore and located near Adalaj off the Sarkhej-Gandhinagar highway, has been donated by Gautam Adani of the Adani Group.

Many other businessmen of the city and those settled abroad have already pledged huge sums of money for the project, prominent among them being Pankaj Patel of Zydus Cadila who has promised an amount of Rs 1 crore. A member of the Tulsi Seva Charitable Trust headed by Shri Kirit Bhaiji, a chartered account from London turned religious preacher, said, "This is going to be by far the best old-age home in the country as it will have facilities which the best clubs and hotels of Ahmedabad will be proud of. "
Pankaj Patel said that there is an acute need for old-age homes providing the right kind of ambience and facilities to the aged. "If you visit some of the existing old-age homes you realise the need for good homes where the old can live a dignified life", he said Gautam Adani, who donated 15 'bighas' of land for the purpose said, "Its for a good cause and I decided to do my bit for the project."

The trust, which has set up a special fund for the purpose headed by local businessman Girish Dani, informs that the air-conditioned old-age home will have about 50 rooms, 10 luxury apartments and 4 dormitories to house the elderly and destitute. Accommodation in a dormitory will cost around Rs 600 and the rest of the expenses will be borne by the trust from the corpus which is to be created.

"So far we have raised Rs 3 crores and funds are not a problem at all because many large corporate houses are interested in the project. Our aim is not just 5-Star facilities but 7-Star facilities," said Dani. Food at the home will be of the highest quality. Apart from this, there will be meditation halls, a nursing home, workshop, library, computer room, health club and gymnasium.

The trustees say the idea had also appealed to a lot of prominent people who would not like to become a burden on their children during their old-age and had expressed the desire to stay in the home once it is ready. The 10 luxury apartments are being specifically created for this category of people and each apartment would cost around Rs 10 lakh, fully funded by those who want to occupy it at a later date.
Besides, several NRIs whose parents don't want to join them abroad, had evinced keen interest in the project as they feel the elders would be better cared for in the old-age home. A large guest-house, where children or relatives of the inmates can come and stay for upto a week, is also being constructed in the campus. "We are sure this will be one place where elderly people would like to come and stay and not be resentful about the attitude of their children," added Dani, who is turning his trip to South Africa, to watch the World Cup, into a fund-raising trip.
